ANECDOTE By Catherine Monetti, MA, RN Ó2004

While there are more than one hundred "stories" to share. I'd like to share with you one of my very favorites. Albeit about a dog, rather than a human, in order to respect confidentiality, it, nonetheless,  delightfully exemplifies the profundity of this work.

MISS EMILY

Years ago, subsequent to an old friend’s excellent role-modelling, and tired of waking up every morning feeling crummy, I decided to do something about it. So, I enrolled in a Tae Kwon Do, or Karate, class.

Several years into my training, my Master became the master of a beloved English bull puppy. He named her “Emily”, and because she was a regular at his school, I began to call her “Miss Emily”. She was the most popular, and beloved, mascot of all, and before and after every class, she would bestow big sloppy kisses on my cheek.

On one particular visit, I noticed that she was limping on her back leg. This limp persisted over several weeks, and finally, I asked our mutual Master about it. He informed me that, several weeks before, she had jumped off their porch, hurt her leg, and that she was not healing.

So, naturally, I resolved to do something about it. After the next class, with witnesses, I engaged in the mutual process of “IPT”, or energy healing. She, like most animals, immediately lay down on her back, all four paws up in the air, went to sleep, and started snoring! While engaged, her back began to twist, almost as if she were convulsing. At that point, an onlooker commented, “Look, her spine is realigning itself”. Intuitively knowing what she meant, I simply continued with the session that took, in total, perhaps six or seven minutes.

Now, a remarkable intrapsychic experience occurred that, as I have said, occurs each and every time I engage in this work. As I grounded her energy, I received the visual image, in color, of a child’s wading pool. Then, after a few more moments, she awakened, got up, and shook herself out. We both went our separate ways.

Upon arrival to my next class, I saw, to my delight, that she was no longer limping! When I asked our Master what significance a pool had for her, he said, “none”. Then, a moment later, said, “Oh, wait! I almost forgot. Last year when we were at a party, I looked over, with horror, to see Miss Emily sinking to the bottom of the in-ground pool! No one had seen her fall in! I immediately jumped in, clothes and all, and saved her!” So, I replied, “Aha! So, THAT was the unresolved emotional trauma that was preventing her hip from healing!” The intrapsychic shift, and emotional and energetic release that occurred, resulted in, lo and behold, no more limp…

A coincidence? Perhaps, yes. However, during both my training in Gestalt Psychotherapy, and own healing trauma work, I learned that the ever-loving Universe is always surrounding us with healing opportunities, and that even seemingly negative experiences, are meant to provide us with a message, if only we are willing to "listen". I also learned that every bit of information comes our way for a reason, and all we have to do is pay attention to it. Hence, with so many recurrent and similar experiences since then, I now know this was not a mere coincidence.

Years after my healing session with Miss Emily, I learned that English Bulldogs are the only breed that cannot swim! And, she was the only dog on whom I have ever worked.

And even more years later, pondering questions posed about the reason I visualized a child's, rather than an adult's, pool, I garnered the insight. Because this work is transformational, and since traumatic experiences are transmuted into positive lived ones, the visualization I received was not of the original traumatic experience, of the in-ground pool. Rather, it was of the positive one(s) she had by virtue of her deep, mutual love of children!

Everything happens for a reason….
